Fitting Instructions
Removal
- Find somewhere safe, dry and secure to place your Epiphone Tom DeLonge Signature ES-333 Guitar while you work on it.
- Undo the screws that hold the control plate to the back of the body and remove the plate.
- You can leave the strings on, which will make testing easy later.
- Undo the nut for the jack socket.
- Remove the control knob.
- Remove the pot nut and dress washer.
- You now need to bring what is inside to the outside. Its best to use a protective cloth to stop the guitar surface getting scratched.
Replacement
- Working on the now external old harness, cut the 1 x bridge ground wire at the pot leaving the wires as long as possible.
- Cut the pickup wires leaving the wires as long as possible.
- You should now be able to remove the pot and jack away from the guitar.
- At this point you may want to clean pot hole from where the old pot has been.
- You will need to check the size of the hole for the pot as on some guitars they are drilled small for cheap electrical components. If they are small, the best way to enlarge them to 10mm to fit CTS pots, is to carefully use a round file or drill. (take your time as the paint can chip).
- You are now ready to fit the new harness.
- From here, everything is in reverse using the wiring diagram below.
- Place the new harness in the guitar and fit nuts and washers etc.
- Solder the 1 x ground bridge wire to the back of the new tone pot (refer to wiring diagram).
- Solder the 2 pickup wires to the new pot (refer to wiring diagram).
- Once this is done, you should test to make sure everything is working. Simply plug into an amp and strum a string if the strings are fitted or use a Multimeter.
- Re-fit the control knob.
- Fit the control panel plate back into place and you are ready to go.
Tools & Equipment
- Philips (Cross head) Screwdriver / Flat headed screwdriver on some models.
- Small adjustable spanner/wrench.
- Good quality soldering iron.
- Wire cutters.
- Masking tape for keeping things in place or out the way while working.
- Pair of long nose pliers or strong pointed tweezers.
- A bit of patience!
Tips
- When soldering the wires to the back of a pot, do not overheat / cook the pot.
- Keep wires tidy and neat and make sure all components are grounded.
